The Power of the Direct Mail Sales Letter
The sales letter is by far the most powerful tool I have ever used in my sales and marketing career. It's like being able to sit down at the kitchen table with thousands of qualified prospects each month and enjoy their undivided attention as you tell your story and present your product or service. With the possible exception of television, there isn't another advertising medium on the planet that can provide you with the intimacy and sheer reach of the direct mail sales letter.
To give you an idea of how effective direct mail marketing can be for your business consider how, in 2005 as Vice President of Sales for a small non-profit organization, I created a sales letter that was sent to about 15,000 prospects. The company had mailed postcard and newsletter campaigns previously with very little response or success but had never used the sales letter as a marketing and sales tool.

Sales letters then became a regular part of our sales and marketing effort. We would consistently mail to our prospect list twice a year using a different letter each time. I have never seen a sales letter outperformed by a postcard, newspaper, magazine or radio ad. Do you know why? First, it's because the direct mail sales letter allows you to convey so much more detail than is possible with any of those other advertising mediums.
Think about it, when you make a purchase decision do you usually do so before or after you have all the details. Marketing studies have demonstrated over and over again that the more information a person is given the more likely they are to make a purchase. Second, a direct mail sales letter is far more personal than any other sales medium outside of a phone call. It allows you to do more than simply share information in great detail. A well crafted sales letter can actually create relationships between you and your prospects. You have probably heard stories of soldiers who came back from war to marry the woman they had corresponded with using letters. I doubt you have heard of this happening as a result of correspondence using postcards or in response to some newspaper ad.
Sales letters are both intimate and powerful. They allow you to communicate on a level where people often make decisions... the emotional level. In short, a good direct mail sales letter will help you make more sales today, tomorrow, and every time you use it. A good sales letter is worth its weight in gold!
Generate leads or direct response sales
Your direct mail sales letter campaign can be used to generate leads and appointments for your own salespeople or to generate direct sales straight from your prospects and customers.
Any decent direct mail company can provide you with a quality mailing list and basic back-end fulfillment services such as printing and mailing. Some will even offer you access to generic sales letters that can be adapted to fit your business or particular offering. Truly rare is the direct mail company that will provide you with custom copy written sales letters.
You get what you pay for Beware the generic sales letter approach. It is a waste of your time and money. A well written sales letter is worth its weight in gold and will continue to produce for you over and over again. Don't be fooled. A good sales letter is not cheap and is never sold as part of a box set of "3000 sales letters for $39" or as part of some "Internet Special." I have been paid as much as $5000 to write a single sales letter. It is not possible to effectively communicate your competitive advantage by cutting and pasting your information into some one-size-fits-all template.
